Nguyệt is used in the traditional opera Chèo, genre of Văn singing in the North while it is the essential musical instrument in an orchestra of Huế singing of the Middle, as well as in an orchestra of renovated opera Cải lương and Tài Tử  southern music. Nguyệt lute can also be found in orchestra of a band of eight traditional musical instrumental timbres (Bát âm) or in ritual and ceremony orchestra. Nguyệt lute can incorporate with two other instruments of percussion to make a complete orchestra served for Chầu Văn singing.
